Within our homes we have pieces of furniture which are purely functional and do not serve any real aesthetic purpose, they are just in our homes to serve a purpose. We don't really think too much about these pieces of furniture and neither do our guests. Sometimes these items of furniture can be quite nice pieces but they might just lack something to set them off, and this thing to set them off doesn't have to be anything too spectacular. Maybe an ornament would do the trick, but cheap ornaments look exactly that, cheap. A bowl of fruit or a water feature is a possibility but they are a bit old hat now.
Tempered glass is a glass that has been treated so that if shattered it splits into small, regular shaped cubes that are unlikely to cause injury. However, many tables are not made from this kind of glass. Many coffee tables are in fact made from a thicker sheet of ordinary cheaper glass. If this glass shatters it can splinter into long spikes that can easily pierce the body. For this reason it is vitally important to check when purchasing a glass coffee table whether it has been made with tempered glass. Not only should you ask the sales assistant but you should seek confirmation that their response is truthful as it can be very hard to tell what type of glass a table is made from just by looking. You might consider it unlikely that it will shatter, but people do fall, particularly children. Even sitting on a table when distracted could cause it to shatter and inflict life shattering injuries.
The material also has its importance. Glass tables are very beautiful and fit in most rooms, but are more difficult to maintain, and if there are young children in the house, they are not the ideal as accidents can occur. White is a very beautiful colour, but again, it is difficult to maintain. Even a single cup placed directly on the table, it can leave marks. Do not be afraid of colour. A mass of orange, green or red will be a splash of colour and will cheer you up every morning. Usual height of coffee tables is normally between 40 and 45 inches. If you often have guests, a higher one might be more suited, because everyone will be able to reach their cup. A rule of interior design says that the height of the coffee table should be about the same height (or not less than five inches lower than) the couch. Ideal length is two thirds of the couch. However, no rule is set in stone. Depending on your tastes and the rest of the room, you can choose what ever size and colour coffee table you wish.
Similarly square coffee tables are excellent in larger rooms although they can overpower smaller spaces when not chosen with care. If you are buying a square coffee table be sure to mark out the floor area that will be covered to make sure that it will not overwhelm the room. Many people with small children prefer a round coffee table as they consider the lack of sharp corners a safer option and less likely to cause accidents. Round tables can be difficult to fit into smaller rooms and can take up more floor space than other shapes. They can be very social however and are a good choice if you regularly sit around playing cards or board games.Consideration should also be given to whether you prefer a coffee table with legs or one that is solid to floor level. Raised coffee tables that allow a clear view under the table can help to create an impression of space; however solid coffee tables can often look more expensive and substantial. Materials:
Drawers And Lift Top Lids. Lift Top Lids can also present a hazard for small children. Very often, particularly in the case of wooden coffee tables the lid can be very heavy. Because of this there is always the possibility of small children trapping their fingers. If you select a table of this kind it may be necessary to secure the top until your children are older to prevent injury. Drawers are another hazard for small children. Fingers are easily pinched and trapped. As with so many other areas of the home safety features may need to be incorporated, such as drawer locks, in order to keep your child safe.
